Best Car Insurance Company List in Ireland
Northern Ireland used to be an expensive place to insure a car compared to the rest of the UK, with fewer options.
How does car insurance work in Northern Ireland?
Car insurance works in Ireland the same way as in other areas of the UK. Although, some of the big UK-based insurance companies have chosen not to offer Northern Ireland car insurance.
Northern Ireland has a small market with just over 55,000 cars registered, making it less attractive to insurers.
Northern Ireland mandates drivers to have a minimum level of insurance with them.
- Third-party – the basic legal minimum, third party fire & theft.
- Fully comprehensive car insurance- comprehensive only covers the car, not the driver, and it’s not mandatory, but you most likely need it. Most drivers choose fully comprehensive insurance, and in many cases, it won’t cost much more than third-party insurance.
This covers car repairs in case of an accident and often provides a courtesy car while your vehicle is off the road and benefits such as legal cover and cover for your possessions in the car.
Note: Coverages and policies in Ireland are not different from the ones in the UK.
Why is third party coverage mandatory in NI?
The third party only covers damage that you do to other people and their cars and property. If you crash into another’s vehicle, your insurance will cover you; however, you have to pay for any repairs that need to be done to your car. The third-party coverage is required so that the public is protected in the case of accidents.
How third-party fire & theft coverage works?
Fire: The insurance company will pay for the damage done by the fire (except for fires caused by a fault in your car).
Theft: Your insurer will cover you if your car is stolen or damaged in the course of a theft.
How much you should pay for car insurance in Northern Ireland?
According to the Consumer Council, NI drivers pay an average of £931 per year for a fully comprehensive auto insurance policy. It is way above the norm in the UK – which is £430 a year.
There are several reasons for this high price:
- Younger drivers make up a higher percentage of the Northern Ireland population, and drivers under 25 always pay more for insurance.
- There’s less competition because the population is not, so dense insurance companies don’t like offering their products to Northern Ireland drivers.
- The average price of car insurance is also different in every region. County Down is the cheapest, while County Tyrone has the most expensive insurance rates.
- NI drivers use rural roads more often, and naturally, rural roads are not so safe.
